Looking at Hofner
pickups can be a good aid to date your Club. The first Club´s,
or 125/126 as they where named by Hofner, where fitted with
single coil pickups made by the company Fuma in Berlin. They
where quite large pieces with six exposed screws and chromed
covers riveted to non adjustable chromed bases. Around 1957/58
Hofner had developed their own pickups and the Fumas where replaced
by the much slimmer "bar" pickup. The first bar pickup
had a rosewood base and cover with a black plastic top. The
rosewood was soon to be replaced by "bakelite" and
the plastic cover was occassionally available in white or even
brown. In 1960 the bar pickup was replaced by a new single coil
, with a slotted chromed cover, known as the"toaster"
pickup. The "toaster" was followed in 1961 by yet
another single coil, the "Super Response", with the
Hofner logo in an rhombus and six exposed screws, known as the
"diamond logo" pickup. Unpredictable as always, Hofner
also produced the "diamond logo" pickup without both
diamond and logo... and even without the screws...There was
also a version with the word "Super" stamped under
the diamond...
In 1963 the singel coils where finally
replaced by Hofner´s first Humbucker, the 511"Nova
Sonic" or "staple" pickup. Similair in size to
the "diamond logo" but with six screws and six exposed
"staple like" polepieces. When the Club 70 was released
in 1967 a new humbucker, 513, also called the "blade magnet"
pickup was introduced.

One should be aware of that
there where fairly long transition periods before old pickups
where replaced by new and therefor instruments produced during
the same year can have different configurations in terms of pickups
and controls. |
